This version of canon's 100mm macro is unknown to alot of photographers. It is actually the version before the one with USM (retailing $800), which is then replaced by the 100mm L IS (retailing over $1300). Despite being an older model, its optics are superb, resolving power and contrast remains extremely good.
Yes it does not have the trills and frills of the newer models, no L designation, no USM, no IS, but optics is definitely good. Comparing purely image quality, this particular model and copy will not only match up to the new models, it might even be better. Some online reviews and feedback complain of the USM version being less sharp focusing at infinity, compared to close up focusing. The older model does not have this problem for sure. This lens is seriously... extremely sharp even wide open F2.8.
A close comparison with this lens would be a third party macro lens such as the Tamron 90mm macro going for about $580 new and about $450 used. Now this older model for sale here is similar to the tamron that its focusing motor is not silent, and it extends when focusing near, but hey for a lesser price you are getting very good canon optics and something that is very very rarely seen locally.
Surprising it uses the same model of hood as the USM version, which means hoods can still be bought easily. Another good point about this lens? it uses 52mm filters, ND, CPL, UV, closeup filters can all be gotten easily and cheaply.
