17-40mm F4L CANON EF USM (77) AUTO FOCUS WIDE ANGLE ZOOM LENS (EX) 

One of the more affordable L lenses around, the 17-40F4L is definitely the most bought and traded canon L lens in this focal length range. On a crop body, its range is rather limited, and as a matter of fact, there are alot of better alternatives, from the tamron 17-50F2.8 to canon's own 17-55F2.8 IS, which offer not just better range, but also a one stop larger aperture. However this lens is still superior compared to the above mentioned lens in terms of built and durability compare to the above mentioned 2 lenses. We have tried using both the 17-40F4L and the 17-55F2.8 IS for video work on the 7D, the 17-55F2.8 despite having some really excellent optics, proved to be more difficult to use because it extends when zoomed to 55mm, and the rather plastic like material used in its construction also prevented a smooth zooming in and out.

The 17-40F4L, like all other L lenses, are designed for fullframe bodies. On a FF body like the 5D, the ultrawide perspective is really beautiful, the L lens lives to its name and proves its worth with highly contrasty images even in flare proned situations, sharp, high resolution images are easily obtained without stopping down. Used on the 5D mark2 in our test, images remained very sharp and distinct even when zoomed in fully on the screen. On a crop body, it still proves to be very useful for event coverage and street shots.

Compared to the 16-35F2.8L markII, of course the 16-35 would be nicer to own, if not for the fact it cost about $2400 brand new now. Lens had been calibrated for sharpness and resolution at canon. Very sharp wide open and a fantastic companion with the 5D. Perfect for ultra wide angle shots, group shots, architecture, scenery etc. Lens in mint condition. Well taken care of, filter always on to protect the lens. Comes with front rear caps.
