18-105mm F3.5-5.6G NIKON DX AF-S VR ED IF SWM (72) AUTO FOCUS MULTIPURPOSE ZOOM LENS (LN)

This lens is widely viewed as the replacement with VR that nikon has for the D80 kit lens, AFS 18-135. Both these lenses are nikon's answer to a growing demand for kit lenses (lenses sold as bundle with the camera body) that are able to give better range, built, image quality and various other features, relative to the cheap plastic like 18-55 from Nikon and Canon. 

Nikon's 18-135 VR has been quite a success, apart from being bundled with the D90 as a kit lens, it is also often sold with other camera bodies, both higher and lower ranges such as D5000 and D300 as bundle. This lens feels alot bigger and more solid compared to the basic 18-55 VR lens that nikon offers. As a matter of fact this lens is pretty good value for its price, combining alot of nikon's high end technology, from IF (internal focusing, helps alot when using a CPL), ED, VR, Aspherical etc etc.. Of course the 18-200VRII would be nicer to own, except it will cost 2-3 times more.

With the ED element and various nikon aberration correction applied on the optic design, this lens gives decently sharp and contrastly image throughout the zoom range.

VR comes in very handy in low light condition. ED allows the good sharpness and contrast in image maintained throughout the focal length.
