The AFS 24-85 is actually an updated version of the AFD 24-85. Quite a pity that nikon made it such that the lens is 1/3 stop slower, both at the wide and tele end, but hey.. in doing do, nikon actually managed to fit in an AFS motor, made the lens alot smaller and compact, and still maintained the wide open sharpness reputation of the 24-85.
This version now focuses fast, maintains a decently large aperture (compared to most of current zoom lenses, F5.6 at the tele end), is lightweight for travelling, covers a good range and best of all, its a fullframe lens, thus no more headache considering about selling away all your DX lenses when you upgrade to a D700 or D3!
Probably dude to lack of marketing, and awareness, or the new selling price too high to entice people into buying... this lens is pretty much hardly seen locally in the 2nd hand market. Quite a pity really, because it offers very good image quality, tested on a D3, resolution remains high when zoomed in and viewed at 100%. Do note as well that compare to its predecessor, this lens is now upgraded with one of nikon's best technology.. ED glass, needless to say we all know how good and important they are thats why the 70-200VR uses 5 ED glass element, and the 70-200VR2 uses 7 ED glass elements.
A lens that doesnt appear often for sale, in absolutely MINT condition, definitely worth its price.

Image taken on a Nikon D3 at 24mm, the ED element ensures low dispersion of light and contrast/saturation being well maintained.
