If you don't need an F2.8 constant lens, don't need to use it on a fullframe body, yet still looking for an extremely lightweight, fantastic image quality telephoto lens that is light on the wallet as well, this lens has to be your best bet.
This lens was launched to compliment the standard 18-55 IS kit lens, giving it an overall good range covering from 28mm to 400mm 35mm equivalent. That is really fantastic, because at the tele end it would be already enough to do alot, from birding to sports. This lens sports IS as well, unlike this usual IS L lenses, the IS kicks in only upon taking the shot, this means that it really conserves power, this is especially crucial for the XXXXD and XXXD DSLRs, since they use lower capacity batteries. For our field test, this IS works really well, we have gotten handheld shots with 1/10s shutter speeds without blurs.
Despite being a relatively inexpensive lens, this lens is definitely no slouch in terms of image quality, in fact it actually contains UD element, this is the stuff they use in the white tele L lenses. Wide open at F5.6, at the 250mm tele end, as long as there is no handshake blur, you can expect high resolving power sharp, contrasty images even when view at 100%. Though this lens does not have USM, its focuses pretty silently still, and relatively fast, similar to the 18-200 IS.
The only 2 disadvantages of this lens i can think of? 1. F5.6 at the tele end is a tad slow, but fortunately it has a 4 stops IS to compensate. This means that the handholdability of this lens is comparable to an F2.8 tele lens.. 2. It is not a full frame lens, well the price and weight more than compensates for it, it you are using fullframe, there is always the 70-300IS.
