One of the most popular macro lens around, this is one lens known to be "too sharp", what it means it when taking portraits, the image taken is too sharp that defects on the models's faces can be seem very easy. That is how good the optics of this lens is. Purely in terms of optical performance, this lens is definitely just as good as both canon's 100mm macro, and nikon's 105mm VR macro. only 2 slight disadvantages are the lack of IS/VR and the lens extending when down to min focusing dist. But of cos, all of these are being well made up for by the price of this lens. The focal length of this lens makes it very versatile, giving delicated 1:1 macro, good for portrait and also functions as a short tele for events when needed. I do know of several photographers who swear by this lens.
Though this is a slightly older version compared to the Di version currently selling in stores, optically and functionality wise, there is practically no difference. Tamron probably changed the exterior to have an "undated" version.

One of the commonly associated problems with shooting close up, is the lack of contrast, saturation and sharpness at near focusing distances, this is pretty evident as shown from usage of extension tubes, closeup filters, reverse mount etc.. The tamron 90mm macro, on the other hand is a true blue macro lens, designed for the purpose of closeup shooting, as shown above, it maintains good sharpness, saturation and contrast even at 1:1 magnification..
